Asics Tiger and Mita sneakers team up once again to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Gel, with a very special project on a GT-II, inspired by a small animal that should be very familiar to all of us, a squirrel.
The Asics GT-II x Mita sneakers “Squirrel” will be releasing on October 15th at Mita sneakers and the worldwide drop should follow in November.
Asics Tiger and Mita sneakers go way back in terms of collaborations. Back in 2008 they started of with the “Blueberry” and “Purple Haze” Gel Lyte III’s followed by the “Kirimomi Project” in the same year, which also included two pairs of the split tongue silhouette.
This collaboration comes in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Gel Technology, which made her debut in 1986 on the Freaks silhouette and also on the GT-II later that year.
The GT-II features hairy suede throughout the upper in a dark brown and brighter brown color way with a typical color blocking, inspired by the different brown tones of a squirrel.
The tiger stripes on the lateral feature a nice light brown tone, while the stripes on the medial side are blue and red, remembering their 25th Anniversary collaboration.
The off white midsole features the word “EYGHTYSYXTOSYXTEEN” on the inner part, honoring the 30 years of Gel Technology.
A special detail is the blue tab on the heel, that we have seen before on the “Trico” Gel Lyte III and V. It’s a Japanese tradition to take off your shoes when you come into a home, so the heel tab makes it easier to take them off.
Personally, I think Mita has done a great job working on a GT-II. It has been a while since we’ve seen someone design on one of my favorite silhouettes. I’m also a big fan of the color way, I think you can’t go wrong with that combination of brown tones, especially in fall. The only negative point I can think about, is the material choice. In my opinion they could have used a bit less of hairy suede and maybe more premium suede or an other material. Apart from that, the pair looks very nice and I love the blue and red stripes on the medial side.
I still think Asics and Mita have done a great job and I’ll be definitely copping them when it comes to the ww drop.
Stay tuned for more information about the “Squirrel” GT-II, which releases this upcoming weekend at Mita sneakers retailed at 16’000¥ (150€) and will drop worldwide in the beginning of November.
