ASICS Tiger and New York based designer Ronnie Fieg join forces once again for the release of the “Volcano 2.0” Collection, that will release this upcoming Friday at Kith shops and Kith.com, including a Gel Lyte III in a very familiar colorway and also a Gel Diablo, which gives it’s comeback after originally releasing in 1995.
Back in 2013 Ronnie Fieg brought back the Gel Lyte V silhouette, which originally released in 1993 in the best way possible, creating the ASICS Gel Lyte V “Volcano”. Eventough he would have liked to use the colorway on the split tongue silhouette, he decided to take the risk to work on the 5’s, to keep pushing the market forward.
Almost four years later RF decides to take another risk and bring back one of his most iconic colorways under the name of Kith.
The ASICS Gel Lyte III “Volcano” 2.0 consists of the same color palette as the 5’s. An upper constructed in different shades of red, brugundy and pink, matching beautifully together and featuring a combination of premium materials as suede, nubuck and mesh crafted in Japan.
Even if their no official numbers yet on the ASICS Gel Lyte III x Ronnie Fieg “Volcano 2.0”, my guess is that we will be seeing similar numbers to the recent Made in Japan pairs, like the Super Green, Milita and Salmon Toe 2.0 or even more limited ones, meaning 700 pairs or less.
The Volcano colorway is also a reflection of Kith’s impending eruption, as the brand has continued their way to the top in the last couple of years with a crazy amount of work.
The Gel Diablo silhouette originally released back in 1995 and is celebrating it’s re-release 22 years later thanks to Ronnie Fieg. He had been trying to bring this silhouette back for years and he’s finally reached his goal, after beeing working on this project since mid-last year.
The pair is crafted in a mix of suede and mesh materials, with a fiery-themed colorway. The upper consists of an off white palette troughout, with coral tiger stripes and some red and blue details on a white Gel midsole.
The ASICS Gel Diablo x Ronnie Fieg “Volcano 2.0” is limited to 1000 pairs total. 500 pairs were released on April 12th and the other half will releasing on Friday.
Personally, I’m extremely excited about this upcoming release, as I’m a big fan of the Volcano colorway and I’m also happy seeing the Gel Diablo brought back by Ronnie. If someone in the industry is able to bring back silhouettes, than it’s the man himself. He has done it before succesfully and he’s doing it again with another great model.
The Gel Diablo “Volcano 2.0” has really grown on me, it’s a very simple colorway, but I really like the color scheme and details Ronnie has build into this beautiful silhouette. Also him honoring such a wonderful release as the Gel Lyte V “Volcano”, just makes it even better.
We will be seeing another colorway of the Gel Diablo by RF later this year, but also a bunch of OG color palettes dropping as inline products in Summer.
Eventough I prefer the “Volcano” cw on the Gel Lyte V, I have to admit it has been a dream of mine seeing this color scheme on the split tongue silhouette for a long time. The Gel Lyte V has a very personal meaning to me, as it was one of the longest camp outs I did since I started collecting. I remember every single minute of those twelf hours I spent in front of Titolo Shop in Bern, back on November 16th 2013 on a freezing day with below cero temperatures, but all I can say it was totally worth it to cop one of the best colorways ever produced on a Gel Lyte V.
The special box gives another nice extra touch to the whole project and I’m really hoping to get lucky this upcoming Friday at the online release. I’ve got my fingers crossed already as I would really love to cop both colorways, not only because I like them, but also because the colorway has a very special place in the history of ASICS and also in my years as a sneaker collector.
Good luck to everyone out there who will be trying and I hope to be doing some on feet pictures of both models very soon!
The Volcano 2.0 collection pays homage to its predecessor in the most elevated fashion. It adds another notch in my timeline with Asics by introducing another new silhouette, while simultaneously celebrating our past together. I am excited to finally share this collection with you.
